比如在这篇文章中，“汤姆在医学院读书，他要当医生”后面的“Tom is at medical school, studying to be a doctor.”就是相应的英语表达。同学将学会用“study to be…”表达“读书…要当…”。

通过“考试前夕，同学们翻书、看笔记，以准备考试”后面的“Students read books and notes in order to prepare for an examination that they are about to take.”，同学将学到英语表达的技巧：用“an examination that they are about to take”表示“考试前夕”。

在本文，我将教给同学如何表达“完成老师布置的作业”、“占满了图书馆”、“提出新观点”、“从生物系毕业”……

同学们要多多积累表达，留心表达技巧。坚持下去，你英语作文进步之快，恐怕连自己都不敢相信。

今天，我接着跟同学们谈谈“学习（STUDY）”。

Study是一个动词。你们一般都学了五年英语，这句话的英文是：You have been studying English for five years now.  注意，这句话的时态一定要使用“现在完成进行时”。“现在完成进行时”表示“从过去到现在，一直在进行的动作”。

学习是大家的主要任务。要学好一个科目，你必须上课听讲，课后阅读书籍、完成老师布置的作业（You learn about a subject by going to classes, reading books, and doing work that your teacher asks you to do.）。

家庭作业是巩固所学知识的手段。家庭作业是学生在课外完成的作业，不包括课堂作业（Students are given homework to do during free time, not during lessons.）。同学们常去图书馆做数学作业（Students often go to the library to do their math homework.）。注意！家庭作业是“不可数名词”，没有复数形式。

考试是检查学习效果的手段。考试前夕，同学们翻书、看笔记，以准备考试（Students read books and notes in order to prepare for an examination that they are about to take.）。特别到期末考试（final exams），学生占满了图书馆（The library is full of students.）。

大家为了一个目标，而努力学习：汤姆在医学院读书，他要当医生（Tom is at medical school, studying to be a doctor.）。玛丽想当会计，就进入了商学院学习（Mary is at business school, studying to be an accountant.）。

许多人利用业余时间，补习各类功课。想要表达“我现在下班后，去上英语培训班（I am taking English lessons after work.）”这句话，可以用“take / have lessons”。“take / have lessons”的意思是：在业余时间花钱学习某个科目，或某项技能（pay for lessons from a teacher in order to study a subject or skill in your free time）。

study还表示“研究”。所谓研究，就是以发现新知识为目标，通过实验手段，仔细研究某个事物（Examine something carefully and do tests on it, in order to find out more about it and discover new facts.）。

在“她花了多年时间，研究狗的行为。”这个句子里，“研究”可用study表示；“花时间做某事”可用“spend…doing sth.”表示。全句即：She spent several years studying the behavior of dogs.

另外，research也作“研究”解。所谓研究，就是认真、细致地研究某个学科，从而发现新知、或提出新观点（Study a subject in a careful, detailed way, in order to discover new information or produce new ideas about it.）。

欲表达“生物系毕业后，约翰到药厂做研究。”这句话，可用“do research”；“后，…到…”可用上“…and then…”；“去…工作”可以用“go to work for…”表达。

全句的英文即：John got a degree in biology and then went to work for a drug company, doing research.  注意！句中的“doing research”是“分词结构”。
